
Getting Your SACMI Blow Molding Lamps to Actually Keep Up
If you’re running SACMI rotary machines, you know they move fast. Like, really fast. When you’re operating at those frequencies, you have almost zero breathing room to preheat your PET preforms. If your lamps lag even a fraction of a second during the start-up cycle, you’re in trouble. You end up with thin walls, burst bottles, and a lot of wasted plastic. It’s frustrating. That’s why we built our infrared lamps to hit peak temperature almost the instant they’re switched on. The secret is in the wave. We use shortwave infrared because it doesn’t just sit on the surface—it punches deep into the PET material much faster than medium or longwave options. We also pack a high power-to-length ratio into these tubes. The result? A massive burst of heat density that gets your preforms to that critical glass transition temperature in milliseconds. Built to take a beating Rapid cycling is brutal on hardware. To stop the lamps from cracking under the thermal shock, we use high-purity quartz glass. Inside, the tungsten filament is halogen-filled. This is a big deal because it stops the filament from evaporating too quickly. Without that, the constant on-off switching would burn your lamps out in no time. And since nobody wants to spend hours modifying their machine, these are drop-in replacements. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15 connectors, they fit tight. You don’t want loose connections—that’s how you get arcing, and arcing is a great way to fry your sockets. A couple of things to keep in mind Here’s the catch: these lamps put out a ton of heat flux. It solves the response time problem, but it puts a lot of pressure on your power supply. Just double-check that your transformers can handle that initial surge of current. Plus, do yourself a favor and check your reflectors every few months. If they’re dirty or pitted, it doesn’t matter how fast the lamp is—the heat won’t bounce back into the preform, and you’re basically throwing energy away.
