
Stop Buying New Blowing Machines (Try This Instead)
If you’re running a mid-sized bottle plant, you know the frustration. You’ve got these aging blowing machines that just can’t keep up with today’s pace. It’s tempting to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine, but honestly? You probably don’t need to. Most of the time, the real bottleneck is just the heating oven. It’s sluggish. The fix is simpler than you think: swap those old, tired heating elements for high-density infrared lamps. You get a massive boost in output without having to move a single piece of heavy equipment or change your floor plan. The secret is in the heat. To speed things up, you need that PET preform to hit its softening point fast. We use short-wave infrared lamps because they actually punch through the plastic wall instead of just heating the surface. When you bump up the wattage or tweak the voltage, you’re basically cranking up the heat flux. This means you can either speed up the conveyor or shorten the oven. It’s that simple. Let’s talk hardware. We usually go with quartz glass tubes filled with halogen gas. Why? Because they stay stable. One thing to watch out for: the connectors. Whether you’re using an R7s or an Sk15, make sure the lamp seats perfectly in the socket. If it’s loose, you’ll get arcing. And arcing leads to burnouts. Nobody wants to be replacing lamps every other week. If you’re worried about scorching the surface of your preforms, coated tubes are a great way to filter out the wavelengths that cause that. Just a heads-up: if you go with a high-wattage 400V setup, check your wiring. If your power supply isn’t rated for the extra current, your wires will overheat. And that’s a problem you don’t want. Making it work. The best part is that these are basically drop-in replacements. You pull the old tubes, wire in the new ones, and tweak your timers. But here’s the catch. More heat density means your cooling blowers have to work harder. If you’re pushing the lamps to the limit to shave a few seconds off your cycle, the oven is going to get hot. Really hot. Make sure your ventilation can actually pull that heat away. If it can’t, you risk warping your reflectors, and then you’re right back where you started.
