
Why we put our heaters through the “damp-heat” wringer
If you’re putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or under a pergola, you’re basically asking a piece of electronics to survive a war zone. Between the thick steam of a morning shower and the unpredictable rain of a backyard patio, moisture is everywhere. We don’t just put a rubber seal on a lamp and hope for the best. That’s how you end up with a dead heater and a frustrated customer. Instead, we put every batch through “damp-heat aging tests.” Basically, we try to break the heaters in the lab so they don’t break at your place. The moisture problem Here’s the thing: water vapor is sneaky. It finds the tiniest gaps you can’t even see. Once that dampness hits the electrical terminals, things go south fast. You get oxidation, short circuits, or what we call “creepage”—where electricity decides to take a shortcut across a dirty surface. If a seal isn’t perfect, the ends of the quartz tube corrode. Then, one day, it just pops. Not a great experience. To stop that, we use chambers that simulate years of rain and steam in a fraction of the time. The heat struggle It’s not just about the water, though. It’s the swing. These heaters go from ice-cold and damp to scorching hot in seconds. That constant expanding and contracting puts a massive amount of stress on where the glass meets the metal. If the fit is off by even a hair, the glass cracks. We spend a lot of time obsessing over those tolerances and making sure the brackets don’t warp after a few dozen cycles. The balancing act You might think, “Just seal the whole thing in plastic!” But that’s a trap. If you seal a heater too tightly to keep the water out, the internal electronics can’t breathe. They start to cook themselves from the inside out, which fries the wiring insulation. It’s a delicate balance. We have to figure out exactly where to seal for protection and where to leave strategic vents so the unit stays cool. At the end of the day, you just want a heater that works when you flip the switch—even if it’s pouring rain outside. Our aging tests are the only way we can be sure that “waterproof” actually means waterproof.
