
Stop Using Halogen Lamps in Your Bathroom
If you’ve ever stepped out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom, you know the struggle. For years, those old-school halogen “light heaters” were the go-to. But let’s be honest: they’re kind of a nightmare in a real wet-room. Here is the problem. Halogen bulbs get incredibly hot. When a stray drop of water or a thick cloud of steam hits that scorching glass, the temperature swings too fast. The glass shocks. It cracks. Then, suddenly, your heater is dead. Even the ones that claim to be “water-resistant” usually have seals that give up way too soon. One leak, and you’re staring at a tripped breaker and a cold floor. That’s why we’ve moved toward waterproof infrared (IR) heaters. We build these with an IP44 rating (or higher), which is basically a fancy way of saying we’ve locked the heating element inside a chassis that actually keeps moisture out. But the real magic is in the shortwave IR tech. Instead of trying to warm up all the air in the room—which takes forever—it sends heat straight to your skin. You flip the switch, and you feel it instantly. It’s that immediate, cozy warmth that makes a morning shower actually bearable. Now, if you’re thinking about swapping yours out, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, check your wiring. These IR units pull a fair amount of power. If your bathroom is old, your current circuit might not be able to handle the load. You might need a beefier breaker so you aren’t constantly resetting your power in the middle of getting ready. Also, they aren’t as tiny as a single light bulb. You’ll lose a little bit of ceiling space to make room for the waterproof casing. It’s a small price to pay, though. I’d much rather have a slightly larger fixture than a heater that shatters the moment the room gets steamy. It’s simply a matter of choosing something that actually lasts.
