
Why an IP55 Rating Actually Matters for Your Outdoor Heaters
If you’ve ever put a heater on a patio, you know the struggle. Between the humidity, the morning mist, and the occasional rain splash, the outdoors is basically a minefield for electronics. Most of the time, moisture sneaks inside, eats away at the parts, and—boom—your heater shorts out right when you actually need it. We built our heaters with an IP55 rating to stop that headache before it starts.
What does IP55 actually mean for you?
Forget the technical manuals for a second. Here is the real-world breakdown. The first ‘5’ is all about the dust. It keeps the gunk out of the chassis. That might sound minor, but when dust piles up on the reflectors, you get these weird heat hotspots. It kills the efficiency and makes the heater work harder than it should. The second ‘5’ is the heavy lifter. It means the unit can handle water jets coming from any direction. We did this by sealing the junction boxes tight and using gaskets everywhere a wire enters the unit. Why bother? Because when a drop of cold water hits a scorching hot infrared element, it causes “thermal shock.” That’s a fancy way of saying the quartz tube can crack or the filament just snaps.Not a great way to spend a Friday night.
Dealing with the elements
It’s not just about the big splashes, though. Tiny amounts of moisture cause corrosion on the contact points over time. To fight that, we used treated alloys for the connectors. It keeps the electricity flowing smoothly without the rust. One quick heads-up: IP55 is great for mist and splashes, but it’s not a submarine. If you’re installing these in a spot with brutal, wind-driven rain or if you plan on power-washing the area, you’ll want to look at an IP65 rating or just throw a protective canopy over them.
