
Making Your Bathroom Heater Actually Smart
Most bathroom heaters just warm up the air, which is a slow process. We do things differently. Our infrared heaters use radiation, meaning the heat hits you directly. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and feeling the sun on your skin. When you hook these up to a smart home system, that “waiting around” part completely disappears.
Heat, Right Now
Infrared lamps get hot in seconds. Seriously, seconds. By adding a smart relay or a Wi-Fi module to the circuit, you can trigger the heater before you even step foot in the bathroom. One tap on your phone or a quick voice command closes the circuit, sends power to the quartz or halogen element, and boom—you’ve got instant warmth. No more shivering while you wait for the room to catch up.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Setup
To get this working, the heater needs the right control board. Depending on if you want to dim the heat or just flip it on and off, we use either PWM or simple relays. Your smart hub tells the actuator what to do, and the actuator handles the power flow to the tube. But here’s the thing: you have to watch your power draw. High-wattage heaters pull a lot of juice. If you have a bunch of other smart gadgets on the same line, you might trip a breaker. We always suggest a dedicated circuit. It keeps your lights from flickering and ensures your smart hub doesn’t crash just because you wanted a warm shower.
The Trade-offs
Adding “brains” to a heater adds a bit of complexity to the wiring. You’re putting a logic board in a room full of steam and splashes. That’s why we use IP-rated enclosures. If the seal isn’t tight, the humidity will eat the electronics long before the heating element ever wears out. Plus, you’ve got to be careful with the install. You’re dealing with a lot of concentrated heat, so you need to make sure the housing is set up properly so nothing melts. It’s a small price to pay for the luxury of a warm bathroom the second you wake up.
