
Getting Your Techne Blow Molding Lamps Back Up and Running
When a heating lamp burns out in the middle of a run, it’s a headache. You don’t want a “project”—you just want a part that fits and works. That’s why we build our IR lamps to be simple drop-in replacements for Techne and other major blow molding systems. Most PET ovens use shortwave IR to get those preforms soft. But here’s the catch: if the replacement lamp doesn’t match the original electrical footprint and heat output exactly, you’ll start seeing uneven walls in your bottles. Nobody wants that. The nitty-gritty on fit and power We don’t overcomplicate things. We focus on the three things that actually matter: voltage, wattage, and length. Take a typical high-output tube—maybe 400V pushing 2500W through a 300mm quartz envelope. It has to be precise. We keep our tolerances tight on the end-caps because the fit is everything. If the lamp is too loose? You get arcing at the terminals. If it’s too tight? The quartz will actually crack the first time it heats up because it has no room to expand. It’s a delicate balance, but we’ve got it dialed in. Why the glass matters We use heavy-wall quartz to protect the tungsten filament. To make sure the heat actually gets into the PET preform instead of just scorching the outside, we use a specialized coating to shift the emission spectrum. It makes the heat denser, which is great for your bottles, but it’s tougher on the filament. Just a heads-up: if your voltage jumps around more than 5%, you’ll probably see the lamps burn out faster. Keep that power steady. Putting them to work You can toss these into pretty much any oven layout. Since we stick to standard dimensions, you won’t have to mess around with your brackets or reflectors. Just swap them out and go. One quick tip: if you decide to push higher wattage to speed up your cycle times, your oven is going to get a lot hotter. Make sure your cooling blowers can handle the extra load. If they can’t, you risk warping the oven frame over time, and that’s a mess you definitely want to avoid.
